biodynamic wine productionBenziger is one of about 35 vineyards in the US that have gone beyond organic principles to a fully biodynamic method of production, where the abandonment of chemical controls and fertilisers in favour of natural alternatives is taken further, so that the balance between soil, plants and animals is made paramount. The setting of the vineyard is dramatic – a large, bowl-shaped valley nestling in the mountains, the vines extending up the slopes toward the chaparral, with dozens of buzzards circling above. In the foot of the bowl is the new wetland area, where three million gallons of water are captured, cleaned and recycled to irrigate the vines. The margins of this area are densely planted with moisture-loving native plants, creating a habitat for a variety of animals – and there are dragonflies everywhere.
